Ipswich: Lansvale Racing race summary

Sudden end for the Lansvale Racing team in QLD.

September 15, 2002 - Sydney's Lansvale Racing V8 Supercar team was eliminated from today's VIP Petfoods Queensland 500 after just 35 laps.

Lead driver Cameron McConville started the race from 19th on the grid, settling into a strong and consistent race pace at 18th by the 29th lap (out of 161).

The team's race came to a sudden end on the 35th lap when John Faulkner attempted a passing manouvre at turn three that resulted in a massive rear side impact with McConville. The LRT driver was forced into the turn 3 gravel trap, suffering substantial damage to his VX Commodore.

Cameron McConville - "I got off to a good start and passed one of the DJR cars off the line and was following Bargwanna for the first part of the race. I'd passed Mark Larkham comfortably and one lap later at the end of the back straight I felt a massive hit from the back wheel and it turned out to be Faulkner. He was quite a few car lengths back and it was clearly obvious that he went in way too deep and took me out of the race. He apologised on television - but the fact is we get zero points and my co-driver Warren Luff doesn't get a drive today."

McConville's co-driver, 26 year old Warren Luff will now have to wait until the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 (Bathurst) in October to make his team debut.

Warren Luff - "I am very disappointed because Cameron had made a good start to the race and things were looking strong. What makes it worse is that Cameron was the innocent victim of someone else's mistake - but that's motor racing. I'll look forward to Bathurst because what I have learned here will make us a stronger team at Mount Panorama."

The Lansvale Racing Team, Sydney's only V8 Supercar team, now looks towards their 2002 Bathurst campaign where they seek to improve upon their impressive top ten finish gained last year.
