ALEX DAVISON'S CLIPSAL TOP 10 MAINTAINS TOP FIVE CHAMPIONSHIP POSITION

IRWIN Racing's Alex Davison has put a debilitating virus behind him to finish today's Adelaide Clipsal 500 in tenth place and maintains a position in the V8 Supercar championship top five.

Having fallen ill on Thursday night, Davison was almost bed ridden on Friday and struggled to drive the two practice sessions. There were even concerns on Saturday that he might not finish the race.

Davison's engineer maintained constant radio communication with him during the first leg of the Clipsal 500 to ensure there was no risk that the Queensland based driver would pass out at the wheel.

Still feeling the effects of the virus, Davison re-focussed his attention to today's second race, having finished the first race in 23rd place, and drove courageously in treacherous conditions to finish inside the top 10.

IRWIN Racing leaves the Clipsal 500 with Alex Davison sitting fourth in the championship behind Jamie Whincup, Mark Winterbottom and Garth Tander.

The V8's hit the track again next weekend for the Qantas Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Melbourne's Albert Park.

What IRWIN Racing's Alex Davison had to say:

"The Clipsal 500 is the worst event of the year to get sick at, bar none. I just hoped to god that it was a 24 hour bug and I'd be right by Saturday, unfortunately that wasn't the case. I had no stamina and my head was pounding in yesterday's race. When you are in the hunt and you've got something to push for and a chance for a reasonable result you find more energy, a bit more motivation. Yesterday I was really sick, my brain wasn't completely in gear and I made a mistake. I was desperate not to make a mistake again today and throw it away, so even when we were going backwards and struggling early in the race I kept reminding myself just to take it easy and let them go. There were cars going past when I was on wets, when the track started to dry out and we found ourselves more competitive, I was able to make up some spots and get a reasonable result, a top 10 is always good, but even better when you've struggled. Sitting fourth in the championship is the positive to take out of the weekend. I was hoping to stay in second, but given we weren't competitive all weekend, it could have been a lot worse."

What IRWIN Engineer Daniel Kroehn had to say:

"I take my hat off to Alex (Davison), he's a true professional. He really shouldn't have been driving this weekend, he was really sick. He's done his best to find some fitness which he did today. IRWIN Racing was a little bit unlucky to qualify were we were, we didn't quite get the most out of the lap but we saw that the IRWIN Ford had the potential. Alex drove really well today in such variable conditions. He kept it on the road and he was able to fight for position at the end of the race. Most importantly he kept his focus on the big picture, which is obviously the championship. We came to Adelaide sitting second and we leave in fourth place. Given the health problems that Alex had, and how it affected his driving, I think that this result is fantastic. It gives us something to build upon."
