IRWIN Racing forms alliance with North Queensland Fury

In a move aimed at establishing a fan base in and around Townsville, V8 Supercar team IRWIN Racing has formed an alliance with A-League newcomers the North Queensland Fury.

The V8 Supercar Championship Series will be making its debut on the streets of Townsville on 10-12 July, while the Fury takes to the field for the first time against Sydney FC at Dairy Farmers Stadium on 8 August.

Ahead of the trip north IRWIN Racing driver Alex Davison got some tips on the round ball game from The Fury's John Tambouras after a pre-season trial match on the Gold Coast recently.

Davison and the IRWIN Racing team will be ones to watch in Townsville after finishing second at the previous race in Darwin.

"The Townsville V8 race is a new experience for our championship and one that we feel all North Queenslanders will enjoy," said Alex Davison.

"There are no teams or drivers from North Queensland, but we feel that forming an alliance with The Fury will provide a tangible link that fans will appreciate.

"From the outside most people see motor racing as an individual sport. However, just like soccer it is very much a team game and IRWIN Racing is aiming to show that on the Reid Park circuit.

"There is a lot of skill in racing a car, especially with feet dancing on the pedals. However, after having a kick around with John I can tell you he has plenty of fancy footwork that is right up there!

"We are keen for some of the boys from The Fury to come down and have a look over the weekend of the race. Then during the year it would be great to catch-up with them either on the Gold Coast or maybe head back to Townsville for a match."

John Tambouras has quickly become a new fan to the V8s.

"I'm originally from Darwin and have seen how that V8 race has become a massive event for the Top-End and it will be the same for Townsville," said Tambouras.

"It's a very exciting time for the people of Townsville and the entire North Queensland region with the V8s just days away and our first game only weeks away.

"We have worked very hard to establish ourselves in the local community and it's great to see the guys from IRWIN Racing wanting to get North Queensland behind them as well.

"As a professional athlete I do enjoy sharing views on different sports. One thing that is the same throughout is the absolute passion we have for our chosen discipline. It doesn't matter if it is scoring a goal or taking the chequered flag; the determination to be successful is right up there."
