Rick Kelly Qualifies Provisional Fifth At Albert Park

Rick Kelly has qualified in provisional fifth position aboard his #15 Jack Daniel’s Commodore for the Albert Park 400 at the Formula 1 QANTAS Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Victoria today.

Kelly was fastest midway through this evening’s qualifying session, but was gradually pipped for provisional pole. Following qualifying an ‘inversion draw’ saw the top eight grid positions inverted meaning the Jack Daniel’s Racing driver will be the seventh car on-track in tomorrow’s Top 10 Shootout.

Todd Kelly had a frustrating qualifying session, spinning his #7 Jack Daniel’s Commodore into the gravel trap at Turn 9 during the 30-minute qualifying session.

As a result of causing a red flag stoppage during qualifying, Todd Kelly will start tomorrow’s opening race of the weekend down in 26th place on the grid.

Shane Van Gisbergen was fastest in today’s qualifying session at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit ahead of Craig Lowndes, Will Davison, Mark Winterbottom and Rick Kelly.

“I want to know if we won a meat tray out of that raffle - it was a bit weird to see it all play out,” said Rick Kelly.

“In the end it didn't affect who is in the Top 10 Shootout tomorrow.

“It was a very interesting qualifying session. We went out at the same time as everyone else and I smoked (locked) a tyre on the first lap, then actually got my fastest time on the first set on the third lap, which for us is pretty good because that means our car is obviously not hurting its rear tyres.

“I came in and as I entered pit lane it was spitting and there was a little bit of rain on my windscreen, so I panicked and said 'throw the second set on and send me back out'.

“We went back out and did what at that time was a respectable lap time that put me to P1. Unfortunately the bad news was that there was no rain coming and I put that time in 17 minutes before the end of the session.

“So it was a very nervous wait from that point to the end of the session there but we managed to stick in the top five, which was great. Had we run the greens a bit later we could have run a bit better.

“I don't think we had the pace to challenge (Shane) Van Gisbergen with the time he did - that was supersonic and we are not quite at that level - but because we had so much time left we had a bit of time to make a change and try something for our race set-up, so all in all it was a good day.”
