Todd Kelly set the fastest time of the day as the V8 Supercars kicked off their 2015 season with the first day of testing at Sydney Motorsport Park.

A quick-fire 10-minute period late in the third and final session was when times tumbled.

Kelly piloted his Nissan Motorsport Altima to a 1m29.5352s, eight-thousandths of a second faster than second placed man, Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney.

Kelly played down the speed of his Nissan, saying that he believes he was on better tyres than many of his rivals.

“There is quite a lot of time left in the car, and I’m not sure whether many people ran quality tyres, so I don’t want to read too much into where we ended up,” he said. “We’re genuinely in the top 10… we’ll see tomorrow.”

Good day for Nissan machinery

Kelly’s pace capped a fine day for all four of Nissan Motorsport’s entries, with younger brother Rick topping the first two sessions.

“The guys have been very, very busy, refining our package to the point where we are competitive,” Rick Kelly said. “We don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves though, I think we were up the front at the test day last year as well.

“In comparison to last year we’re even stronger again, so it really does show that the hard work is paying off. For us to have two first places and a fifth in my car, and for Todd to top the times in the last session, is great for his confidence, and great for our confidence as a team.”

Michael Caruso was third fastest in another Nissan, with Lee Holdsworth, now part of Walkinshaw Racing Holden squad was fourth. David Reynolds was fifth quickest, with the final Nissan shared by James Moffat and Taz Douglas sixth. Red Bull's Craig Lowndes, Garth Tander and rookie Ash Walsh with Erebus Motorsport rounding out the top 10.

Former NASCAR race winner Marcos Ambrose was 15th fastest as he continues his comeback to the series.
