CENTURY BATTERIES AUSTRALIAN GT PRODUCTION CAR CHAMPIONSHIP

LAKESIDE NOTES 27th JUNE 1998

LAKESIDE PADDOCK NEWS AND UPDATES

1a Peter Fitzgerald Porsche 911 RSCS Neutral handling but concerned with tyre life as rear rubber reading 120 degrees ... 20 degrees hotter than he would like.

3a Alf Costanzo Maserati Ghibli Cup Twin Turbo Front suspension problems in the opening session hindered times. Looking at stiffer springs for the car for tomorrow.

5a Garry Waldon Dodge Viper GTS Disappointed that car wasn't a bit quicker but not helped in the opening session by some understeer in critical parts of the circuit.

12a Terry Bosnjak Mazda RX7 SP Car running well and team now trying to sort handling. Suffering oversteer on new tyres and held back in the opening session by a deflating tyre.

26a Ross Almond Mitsubishi Lancer RS Turbo Evo V Unfortunately suffered engine failure during the second session and will be a non-starter tomorrow. Had previously qualified well in the opening session.

27a John Bowe Ferrari F355 Challenge Pole position for both races with times "as good as I could do." Very pleased with the balance of the car.

30a Chris Smith Ferrari F355 Challenge Really happy with the car but still learning both the car and the circuit. Neutral handling.

52a Domenic Beninca Porsche 911 RSCS Disappointed to be starting from fourth on the grid for both races but very pleased with overall race package for Sunday.

64a Bob Thorn Toyota Supra RZ Twin Turbo Very pleased with the handling of the car. Improved times by .3 of second and engine reliability is holding up well after Eastern Creek failure.

85a Rodney Forbes Porsche 911 RSCS Late out for qualifying in the second session after discovering a rear shock absorber problem at the last minute.

2b John Cowley HSV GTS-R 215i Set fastest ever Lakeside time at 60.278 seconds in the opening session and happy with the car. Unable to qualify for second race due to business commitments in Sydney.

6b Chris Kousparis Subaru Impreza WRX Turbo Enjoying strong reliability after a succession of recent problems. Slight understeer but very pleased with the car. Running full throttle through the kink and with just a "tiny" lift on the back part of the circuit. Looking forward to a great race.

7b Peter Boylan Subaru Impreza WRX Turbo Went very well yesterday but slower today on new tyres. Trying to get over the flu. Enjoying the circuit where he once held the clubman lap record for more than 12 years – 54.2 seconds.

18b Murray Carter Nissan 200SX Neutral handling and keeping an eye on water and oil temperatures which are slightly higher than normal.

44b Dean Canto Subaru Impreza WRX Turbo Slight understeer and believes there is still room for improvement despite being on pole for both races. Getting quicker as he comes to grips with the circuit.

47b John Trimbole Mitsubishi Lancer RS Evo III Turbo Understeering badly. "It’s ploughing like a pig". Severely concerned regarding tyre life as the front tyres are peeling rubber off.

20c Rob Chadwick Mitsubishi Magna TE Sports Suspension revisions has resulted in a 1/2 second gain since yesterday. Car is two seconds faster than last year.

21c Jim Myhill Mitsubishi Magna TE Sports Hoping to find a bit of speed as the car is not turning in as nicely as he would like. Has previous experience at Lakeside driving a Superkart ... "the track seems a lot narrower in the Magna"

28c Guy Andrews Ford Falcon XR8 Iron man impressing in the car after suffering power steering problems yesterday. Getting quicker all the time.

55c Mark Cohen Holden Commodore VS SS Suffering slight understeer in certain parts of the circuit. Still running on old tyres and attempting to raise additional funds by running a sticker for an Austero radio competition "Ugly Phil’s Scam". If the sticker is seen on television, Cohen could win $5000.

88c David Ratcliff Toyota Camry CSi "Understeer directly relative to amount of throttle applied" but overall very happy with the car.

4d Clayton Haynes Toyota MR2 GT Suffering oversteer and learning "respect" for the fast circuit. Has suffered a long list of problems including a holed radiator, broken windscreen and a flat tyre.

10d Carol Jackson Honda Civic VTi-R Enjoying laps on her home circuit and improving all the time. New paint scheme debut for this weekend.

13d Colin Osborne Toyota MR2 Bathurst Disappointed at his inability to get the most out the car. Running similar times to 1997 despite improvements made to the car.

15d Luke Searle BMW 323i Quite pleased with the car to date and confident of strong showing tomorrow.

32d Michael Simpson BMW 323i Tiny bit of oversteer not hindering progress as the set-up is exactly to his liking. Confident of going even faster tomorrow.

33d Allan Letcher Honda Civic VTi-R Car suffering from understeer but driver happy to be around one second faster around Lakeside than last year.

35d Ric Shaw Toyota MR2 Bathurst Running around one second faster than last year and pleased to simply get the car on track this weekend. Huge assistance received from Premier Panel Beating in Sydney after his Eastern Creek crash.

71d Phil Kirkham Mazda 626 Suffering oversteer as the car felt "flighty". Tail of the car very bouncy in the opening session where he suffered from a deflating front left tyre.

42e Nigel Stones Suzuki Swift GTi Ran out of petrol in the opening session and improved times in the afternoon after "driver got his head together."

75e Aaron McGill Suzuki Swift GTi Understeering slightly but pleased with the car with plenty of between race preparation going into the machine including fresh engine and dyno work. Playing with shocks and camber.

98e Nigel Williams Suzuki Swift GTi First time in a front wheel drive car for the street sedan Commodore race. Learning both the car and the circuit.
