Simon Wills threw down the gauntlet to championship rival Paul Dumbrell in qualifying today for round six of the Konica V8 Supercar Series at Mallala Motorsport Park.
Wills' Commodore stopped the clocks at 1 minute 8.230 seconds, just edging out championship leader Dumbrell by .097 of a second.
Wills trails Dumbrell by only 17 points in the title chase and with 90 points on offer for victory in each of tomorrow's three 20-minute events, the championship is still wide open.
"It is great to grab pole position, but tomorrow is the day that counts," Wills said.
"It is going to be a very tough day and any one of the top six or seven drivers can still win the championship. I am quite pleased with the car but will we still have to have luck on our side."
Queenslander Michael Simpson (Falcon) was third fastest ahead of Canberra driver Dale Brede (Commodore).
South Australian drivers also fared well with Adam Wallis (7th), Alan Heath (11th) and Ross Halliday (14th) hoping for a strong championship finish on home soil.
The first of tomorrow's three races kicks off at 11.30am. <pre>
