The Sandown 500 has been red-flagged after Volvo GRM driver James Golding hit the wall hard towards the end of the back straight.

Golding, driving alongside James Moffat in the #34 Volvo, went into the wall at Turn 6 after suffering what looked to be a tyre failure at what is one of the fastest parts of the circuit.

The Supercars rookie, who won today’s Dunlop Series race, had no chance of making the corner, the front-right locking as soon as he hit the brake. He hit the wall head-on, violently launching the back of the car into the air.

Golding hopped out of the wreck effectively unaided, and appears to have escaped serious injury.

Team owner Garry Rogers confirmed that the team had noticed the tyre deflating earlier in the lap, but that Golding reported it was okay over the radio.

“He thought it was fine, we were uncertain but he said it felt okay,” said Rogers. “Certainly it could well have been the tyre was deflating. We can’t do anything about it now. What is done is done.”
