Monaro victory at grand prix makes Peter's perfect comeback.

Peter Brock drove his Nations Cup Holden Monaro straight to the winner's podium on his return to motor racing at the Fosters Australian Grand Prix today.

The 58-year-old champion cruised to victory in the first of four races in the Cleanevent Nations Cup for GT sports cars after Paul Stokell's Lamborghini was knocked out of the lead in a collision with a backmarker during the closing stages.

D'arcy Russell finished second in a Chrysler Viper, followed by Australian Rules football identity Sam Newman in his first drive for the Lamborghini team.

Brock, who had competed in a circuit race only once before since his retirement in 1997, said he was happy to take the win.

"I suppose I was a bit fortunate that the lead car was taken out, but a win for Peter Brock and Monaro has to be okay," he said.

"The car was fabulous and I can see why everyone likes driving it."

After his collision with the TVR Chimera of Kosi Kalaitzidis, Stokell retired the Lamborghini with rear suspension damage two laps from the end of the race. He said it would be repaired overnight.

Earlier, he had claimed pole position with a lap time of 2 minutes 2.78 seconds, then set the fastest race lap at 2:2.52.

Victorian Rod Wilson took out the Group Two competition with sixth outright in a Maserati Trofeo, marking a promising official return for the Italian make to international sports car racing.

Mark King, from the Gold Coast, won the GT Performance class in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII.

Five of the 24 starters failed to finish the 10-lap event, while third-fastest qualifier Greg Crick failed even to make the grid after his Chrysler Viper developed a gearbox problem.

The second Cleanevent Nations Cup race will be over eight laps at 4 pm tomorrow, with Brock in pole position.
