Emery has played a crucial role in the growth of Nissan’s Australian motor racing programme since taking over the role in 2014, including ensuring the extension of the Supercars involvement with a fresh two-year deal for the 2017 and 2018 season.
He was also heavily involved in the successful Bathurst 12 Hour programme, which involved Nissan Australia actually purchasing a GT-R GT3 after winning the race in 2015 to ensure it always had hardware available to compete.
However his time at the helm of both the Australian arm of the carmaker and its local motorsport activities has now come to an end, with Emery leaving the role.
He’ll be replaced by Stephen Lester, who joins after two years as Infiniti’s Managing Director in Canada.
“Stephen Lester’s arrival at Nissan Australia coincides with our plans for the brand’s next direction and he brings to our Australian team strong experience, knowledge and business-building skills,” said Yutaka Sanada, Regional Senior Vice President and Head of Nissan in the Asia and Oceania region.
“He takes the reins from Richard Emery, who has successfully guided our Australian operation with steady leadership and business improvements since 2014.”
Emery’s departure comes at what he himself phrased as a ‘critical point’ for the future of Nissan’s Supercars programme.
Nissan Australia declined to comment on the future of the Supercars programme in light of Emery’s departure when contacted by Motorsport.com.
