July 8, 2001 - 25 year old Canberra driver Dale Brede and the NRC Racing V8 Supercar team have endured a tough day in the penultimate round of the 2001 Konica V8 Supercar Series at Queensland's Lakeside Raceway today.

After working late into the night yesterday, the team's confidence was boosted with Brede's 6th fastest lap time during the warm up, proving that the NRC Racing VT Commodore was responding well to several changes made to rectify the rear grip problems that hampered qualifying.

Problems started at the conclusion of the warm up, when a freak electrical short circuit destroyed the VT Commodore's battery. Upon checking the system and replacing the battery for the first race, the electrical system once again shorted, leaving Brede stranded and unable to start the race under the car's own power.

After being dealt this blow, Brede completed what many observers considered to be his best race of his rookie season in the second Lakeside race. Starting from the last spot on the grid (21st) and sprinting his way up to 8th by the chequered flag, the Canberra driver setting almost identical lap times to those of the leaders in the process.

After a bad start on another set of tyres for the third race, Brede slipped from 8th to 11th and spent most of the race fighting his way back into the leading pack, but found it hard going with these tyres, making his way up to 8th by the chequered flag.

Dale Brede - "I am very disappointed about our first race ending before it started - it robbed us of a possible front row start to the second race, which turned out to be a fantastic race for me from the very back of the grid. In the third race the clutch slipped at the start and I was spending the race trying to pass slower cars which was frustrating but this is the nature of this circuit. I know that we were setting fast lap times but it was almost impossible to make up ground by race three with that set of tyres. It was a tough weekend due to some very bad luck more than anything else."

NRC Racing Team Owner, Arthur Abrahams - "We displayed promising pace this weekend but failed to capitalise on this with the electrical fault costing us the first race. It seems that we were destined to only pick up a handful of points towards the Championship here at Lakeside. On the other hand, with Leanne Ferrier failing to finish and David Parsons having a horrible day, our points damage was limited."
