Morris crashes out Of Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst 1000.

Sirromet Wines Holden Commodore driver Paul Morris crashed out of today's Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst 1000 V8 Supercar Championship motor race when holding seventh position.

Morris crashed into a concrete barrier at the end of Mountain Straight after he and team-mate Wayne Wakefield had completed 135 laps in the 161-lap event.

Until the incident the two Queensland drivers had been in the top 10 for most of the race on the 6.2km Mount Panorama circuit and at one stage Morris held second place.

Morris attributed the accident to a mechanical problem in the left-front area of his VX Commodore shortly after the team's scheduled final pitstop on lap 133. Morris, who started the race from 10th position on the grid, drove a total of three stints, and Wakefield two.

The team completed their compulsory brake-pad change on lap 74 during one of the nine Safety Car periods during the race. Just three laps earlier Morris was forced to undertake a 'drive-through' penalty after Wakefield was found to have inadvertently switched off the Pit-Lane Speed Limiter on the car.

Holden Racing Team Commodore drivers Mark Skaife and Jim Richards won the 10th round of the championship in a time of 6-hrs 58-mins 41.026-secs. They finished 2.937-secs clear of Steven Richards and Russell Ingall in a Castrol Perkins Holden Commodore, who were followed by Jason Bright and Tomas Mezera in the second Holden Racing Team entry.

Skaife's fourth win in the event enabled him to clinch the championship title for the fifth time. Skaife joined Dick Johnson and Ian Geoghegan as the only drivers to win the championship five times. The result of this year's Bathurst race also boosted Jim Richards' tally of 1,000km victories at Mount Panorama to seven.

PAUL MORRIS QUOTES: "It's very disappointing not to finish because the team did a lot of good things today. Soon after our last pit-stop I realised something was wrong when I could smell tyre smoke on the guard. I thought it was strange because I hadn't hit anything. Then the tyre 'blew' and I went straight on into the fence. It went in front-first and then slapped around the left side of the car. There is major damage. We're still investigating what went wrong on the car and we will have a good look at it when we get it back to the workshop (on the Gold Coast). The car was at its best in my second stint after we'd played around with the front bar. It was quick across the top of the Mountain."

WAYNE WAKEFIELD QUOTES: "When I first got into the car we had a number of Safety Car periods, and that always makes it difficult to get into a rhythm. I ran behind (Tomas) Mezera in the HRT car most of the time, with (David) Besnard behind me and I was able to hold our position. The second time I went out it was more difficult, especially near the end of the stint when it started to rain and there was even some hail. The car was breaking away without warning, and it was quite wet down the bottom part of the circuit. I was having a good run on the second Shell Falcon when our fuel load went down. It's a shame we didn't finish."
