FPR FALCONS SECOND & TENTH IN OPENING PRACTICE
March 23, 2007 - Orrcon Ford Credit FPR Falcon driver Mark Winterbottom has started his Round two campaign across the Nullabor in fine style by posting the second fastest lap of Friday's opening practice session.
Winterbottom's fastest lap time of 56.6576s was just over one tenth of a second behind Western Australian driver Garth Tander who took the top spot. The FPR Falcon driver waited until the last minute of practice to become the fastest Ford driver in the west today.
Castrol FPR Falcon driver Steve Richards, who has won the last two V8 Supercar rounds in Perth, was 10th fastest with a best lap time of 57.3129s.
Both FPR Falcon drivers' results today were made all the more impressive by the fact that 90% of the track time in practice was spent working on different car set-ups, components and configurations, with both drivers seeking to set a strong lap time during the closing stages.
Rival drivers Mark Skaife, Rick Kelly and Ford's Craig Lowndes made up the top five today behind Winterbottom.
#5 Mark Winterbottom- "We spent the majority of the session working to improve the car in a number of areas and we held on to the top ten using very old tyres. So we knew when changing to new rubber that we would be able to set a good time. Another lap may have seen us in P1 given the pace that we had today. A positive start to the weekend, but the real truth will be known when all 31 of us are on new tyres tomorrow."
#6 Steve Richards - "I am happy with the car, we are heading in the right direction, particularly with our improved braking, corner entry and mid-corner speeds gained during practice. I am very confident that we have addressed many areas today and look forward to being faster tomorrow."
FPR Motorsport Director, Tim Edwards - "A very good start to the round considering that we spent most of it working on developing our race set ups aside from trying to set the fastest lap times. Second and tenth is a strong start and very encouraging for tomorrow."
Today's practice was held in fine and warm conditions at Perth's Barbagallo Raceway with no less than seven red flag stoppages due to a number of accidents and off circuit forays. FPR returns to the track for qualifying at 11:00am (1:00pm EST) tomorrow, with the first of three 50 lap races to start at 2:25pm (4:25pm EST).
