WPS PUMPED UP FOR PERTH

WPS Racing will be looking to continue its positive start to the 2006 V8 Supercar Championship when the third round fires into action at Perth's Barbagallo Raceway next week.

The Gold Coast based outfit has begun the year in impressive fashion with Brazilian Max Wilson finishing inside the top ten in Adelaide before qualifying for the top ten shootout in New Zealand. This was the 20th time the pint-sized pilot had qualified for a shootout from his 53 rounds in the championship since 2002.

Wilson went on to record his best race result since round 11 at Surfers Paradise in 2004 by finishing sixth in the opening race. Unfortunately an opening turn incident in the inaugural reverse-grid race ended his run in the second leg before further damage also forced him onto the sidelines in the third journey.

"It was a real shame that we didn't finish New Zealand with a top ten result because we had shown good speed and potential throughout the weekend. The final result was far from what it potentially could have been but unfortunately that is a part of the game we're in," said Wilson.

"Our focus is now on a good result in Perth. I'm looking forward to building on the speed shown over the opening two rounds and hopefully translating that speed into results nest weekend."

Courtesy of his early season results Wilson is 15th in the championship standings with his team-mate Jason Bargwanna four places further back.

Like his WPS Racing team-mate, Bargwanna was another unfortunate victim of the reverse grid melee in the second race at Pukekohe after finishing 11th in the opening stanza.

The former Bathurst champion recovered in the third race to finish 13th and heads to Barbagallo with the confidence from the opening two rounds added to the fact that he recorded a season best fifth at the corresponding round in Perth last year.

"There was certainly a spot inside the top ten for the taking in New Zealand if we didn't get caught up in other people's incidents," said Bargwanna.

"The Barbagallo circuit is a real driver's circuit and one that I enjoy. I had a good run there last year and, on top of the knowledge that the team have been working hard to extract even more speed out of the car, I'm looking forward to a good weekend."

Practice for the V8 Supercars will be held on the afternoon of Friday May 12 followed by qualifying on Saturday morning with the opening race to be contested on Saturday afternoon. The first 58-lap race on Sunday will be a "reverse-grid" race with the starting positions being the reverse of the finishing positions from Saturday's race. The round will be highlighted with the third sprint race at 1:30pm on Sunday afternoon local time. All races will include a compulsory pit stop to enable the pit crew to change a minimum of two tyres.

The local time in Perth is two hours behind AEST.
