Power is at the Bathurst 1000 today, cheering on the DJR Penske squad from the garage. However, he was almost a starter in the 2015 Great Race, having been in discussions with Roger Penske about the team running a wildcard entry for he and Montoya.
Motorsport.com understands that Penske ultimately opted to concentrate on the single-car entry for Scott Pye and Marcos Ambrose.
Bathurst still “on the radar”
While he missed out on a drive this year, Power says coming back to Mount Panorama has given him fresh enthusiasm to get back in the near future.
“When I first turned up to the circuit, I just wished I was driving, honestly. It’s such a fantastic place,” he told radio station 1116 SEN.
“I definitely want to come and run here again. The way that the IndyCar season has been finishing recently, it almost allows you to do all three endurance races, which means you kind of get your head in the game as far as driving these cars, because they’re quite different to what I drive.
“It’s a cool experience running at Bathurst. I remember back in 2002 when I drove with [Mark Larkham], saying ‘that’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had in my life’, getting to run around The Mountain here.
“So it’s definitely on the radar.”
