Pukekohe Supercars: Whincup finds redemption in Race 4

Whincup got the jump on his teammate Shane van Gisbergen, who had to fend off fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin in the first set of corners. 

This marks his sixth visit to the top of the podium this season and the 103rd victory of his career.

Once he cleared him, Van Gisbergen went in pursuit of Whincup. Although he got within a few tenths, he never really got close enough to make a move. Over the radio, he was warned to "make it clean" if he were to have a dive.

As the laps clicked away, he lost contact with Whincup. At the finish, 8.7 seconds separated the Holden drivers. It was redemption for the veteran after spinning himself and Van Gisbergen in the earlier race. 

Although there were no safety car interventions, there was plenty going in throughout the field.

David Reynolds went off right at the start, taking out some signage and losing a couple laps while his car was repaired. Rick Kelly also fell off the lead lap when he cut a right rear tire. In the midst of battle, Andre Heimgartner had both his front and rear end twisted up from contact with other cars. He was forced to retire from the race. Tim Slade and Dale Wood also found each other at Turn 5, making contact and running wide.

Closer to the front, McLaughlin led a train of cars while trying to defend third place from Chaz Mostert. He managed to do just that, taking the final spot on the podium. Mostert finished fourth and Mark Winterbottom fifth. Craig Lowndes, Garth Tander, Fabian Coulthard, Scott Pye, and James Moffat filled out the backend of the top ten.

Van Gisbergen may have only won one of the four SuperSprint races, but he managed to secure the great honor of the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy. He's also extended his championship lead to 191 points over Whincup ahead of the season finale.
