Ryan Walkinshaw: We need to do a better job

Mobil 1 HSV Racing boss Ryan Walkinshaw says the team ‘has to do a better job’ as it continues to adjust to life outside of full factory Holden backing.

The former Holden Racing Team squad endured a difficult weekend at Barbagallo Raceway, culminating in Scott Pye finishing Sunday’s race 14th, while James Courtney was just 22nd after a fuel miscalculation saw him need to make a late stop.

Even before the race Courtney made his frustration public, saying he was ‘embarrassed’ in a heated TV interview after qualifying down in 20th.

“No one likes having a bad race weekend, and coming off another bad race weekend last time as well, it compounds the frustration,” said Walkinshaw when asked by Motorsport.com if Courtney’s feelings were shared through the garage.

“JC is frustrated but no one is more frustrated than myself and everyone else in the team.

“When we go out there we want to go and win races, and the last couple of weekends haven’t been great.

“We need to do a better job.”

No interest in fresh chassis claims

As part of his on-air vent on Sunday morning Courtney also cast doubt over the #22 Commodore chassis, saying “maybe Garth [Tander] was right and maybe that car is possessed”.

The 2010 Supercars champion was forced to switch shells after his car was wrecked in the 12-car pile-up in Tasmania, taking over an ex-Tander chassis.

The competitiveness of that particular chassis has been a sore point in the past, Tander calling it into question during his time at the team.

Walkinshaw, however, has little interest in having what he says is a “ridiculous chassis conversation”, confirming that detailed checks have been undertaken and zero problems with the car have been uncovered.

“We are going to look at all the evidence – but it will be based on evidence, not what people in the press talking about it and what previous drivers have said about it,” said Walkinshaw.

“We have done every test we can possibly think of doing on that chassis to make sure it is up to scratch and it has come out fine in every test we have done.

“I would suggest it has more to do with us not having the car set up in the right window at the moment and we need to sort it out.”
