SANDOWN, SUNDAY SEPT 14 1997: Not even drought breaking rain could deter a huge crowd from attending the 1997 Tickford 500 at Melbourne's Sandown raceway. The huge crowd had gathered to say farewell to hometown hero Peter Brock in his final Melbourne appearance but it was Brock's younger teammates New Zealand's Greg Murphy and former champion Craig Lowndes who took the incident packed race. Second was the Holden Commodore of Larry Perkins and Russell Ingall with former world champion Alan Jones and his partner Jason Bright the first of the Fords in third. Brock and new team mate Mark Skaife started from pole but the dream ended when they were forced to pit early in the race with throttle trouble. The teams now move to Bathurst for the new IMG run Primus 1000 on October 16. Brock will meanwhile partner ex F1 driver Derek Warwick in a Holden Vectra in the traditional Bathurst on October 5.
