NATIONS CUP: Morgan 1st, Richards opens big series lead
GT PERFORMANCE: Holdens finish 1-2 in thriller
PORSCHE driver Jim Richards extended his lead in the Megamantis.com Australian Nations Cup Championship after a blown tyre forced out key rival Paul Stokell in round 6 today at Sandown International Motor Raceway, Melbourne.
The 20-lap race was won convincingly by pole-qualifier Geoff Morgan in a Chrysler Viper, 1.34 seconds ahead of Mark Noske in a Ferrari 360.
Richards finished third, but the double points on offer today and the retirement of Stokell¹s Lamborghini with tyre failure caused by brake lock-up added 100 points to his lead in the Meguiar¹s Drivers Championship.
The Lamborghini¹s retirement is not expected to prevent its appearance with Stokell and co-driver Steve Johnson at 1.05 pm in initial qualifying for tomorrow¹s Clarion Sandown 500.
Another 500 competitor, Peter Fitzgerald, limped across the finish line with a broken gearbox, but collected enough points to retain third in the series behind Stokell.
In round 6 of the Century Batteries GT Performance series, also a double-points race, Holden Commodore GTS driver Ed Aitken came out on top of a thrilling 18-lap battle.
The lead changed several times between Aitken, Philip Polites in an identical Holden and Graham Alexander in a Mitsubishi Evo V and finished in that order.
Championship leader Brett Peters competed only four laps in his Subaru STi, but remains comfortably ahead of John Bowe, who did not race his Ford Mustang today.
CHAMPOINSHIP POINTS:
Nations Cup/Meguiars Drivers Championship: 704 J. Richards, 574 P. Stokell, 566 P. Fitzgerald, 537 G. Morgan, 459 T. Quinn, 420 D. Russell.
