Championship leaders Stone Brothers Racing left the early headlines to the opposition and concentrated on race set-up in the opening practice sessions for this weekend's Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 at Bathurst today.
The SBR Falcons being shared by Marcos Ambrose and Russell Ingall and Mark Winterbottom and Mark Noske were 14th and 15th respectively on the combined timesheet from today's two practice sessions.
The team ran older tyres all day and worked on getting the cars circulating well at a race pace.
The SBR cars, jointly sponsored by Pirtek and Caltex Havoline, were in the top seven in the morning session before the opposition decided to go into "qualifying" mode in the afternoon and bolt on newer rubber.
Winterbottom got more of a look at the track today when he drove 14 laps in the Konica V8 Supercar support race practice session.
This weekend's race will be round 10 of the 13-round V8 Supercar Championship Series.
DRIVER QUOTES
MARCOS AMBROSE
"We are just making sure we have a good race car," said Ambrose.
"We messed around with fuel loads and settings and ran the same tyres on the #4 car all day.
"We could have bolted on a new set of tyres and been up there, but that's not what we were about today.
"We were just happy doing what we were doing."
RUSSELL INGALL
"We are just sticking to our game plan," said Ingall.
"Virtually everyone else in front of us threw good rubber at their things, but we were on the same older tyres all day.
"We are looking at the big picture.
"We will be racing in the low to mid 10s (2 minute 10-second bracket) and we want to make sure the car is comfortable around that.
"Everyone seemed to be in qualifying mode, but that's not what we are about."
MARK WINTERBOTTOM
"The car feels really good," said Winterbottom.
"I think there is probably more left in me than the car.
"I was just really having a good look around the place today and building my confidence.
"The track was different in the Konica session this morning because there was some oil on the track, but I got in some good observation laps."
MARK NOSKE
"The car is best I have ever had at Bathurst," said Noske.
"I was just really familiarising myself with the track again today and look forward to going quicker tomorrow.
"The whole experience has been great so far with SBR."
