Stone Brothers Racing's Mark Winterbottom has claimed pole position for tomorrow's first race of the 2003 Konica V8 Supercar Series fifth round at Winton Motor Raceway.
Winterbottom showed what speed his Milligan Food Group's Falcon AU is capable of, qualifying fastest in this afternoon's session with a lap time of 1.23.550.
SBR might well have another championship contender on their hands if Winterbottom can take out this weekend's round, only needing 177 points of the 194 in total to take out the 2003 Championship, but he is still not focusing on the title possibility.
"We are just taking it round by round at the moment," Winterbottom said. "I think if you start thinking about the possibility of winning the Championship too much you'd probably end up losing it, so we are just looking to do the best we can do this weekend."
Second fastest today was Gulf Western Oil's Matthew White with a lap time of 1.24.2057, closely followed by local-based Konica V8 Supercar driver Brad Jones Racing's Andrew Jones and Hydraulink Racing's Mark Porter. Holden Young Lions driver Dale Brede rounded out the top five.
Today's practice and qualifying did not go unscathed, with a number of red flag incidents occurring in the first session of the day.
Championship V8 Supercar Series regular David Thexton was among the casualties, along with Terry Wyhoon Racing's Terry Wyhoon and Sydney Star Racing's Grant Elliot as well as eventual fourth fastest Porter.
"We had some bad luck at the start of the day," Porter said. "The team did a great job to get the car back on the road, which helped a lot with the end result."
Porter is currently sitting in third position on the Championship points table and fourth with the worst round dropped. He will be looking for a consistent round result this weekend to keep him in a competitive position for the final round in Mallala at the end of August.
"We are aiming for a podium position at the end of the Championship despite not being as consistent this year as some of the cars in front of us," Porter said.
"We will be looking to regain some of our consistency tomorrow to keep us in a competitive position for the final round of the series."
All the V8 Supercar action will kick off at 11.25am tomorrow, with the full reverse grid race two commencing at 1.20pm.
