STAND-IN Holden driver Tony Scott threw a wild card into calculations for the deciding round of the Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship when he set the fastest lap time in official practice sessions today at Sandown International Raceway, Melbourne.

Scott, competing for only the second time this year, trumped championship regulars with a lap of 1 minute 23.37 seconds in an HSV Commodore GTS V8, while series leader Mark King could do no better than fourth in a four-cylinder, all-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Lancer RS Evo V.

Although King struggled for qualifying speed, the Queenslander said his focus was on clinching his first GTP championship with a steady drive in Sunday's two races, following a no-show this weekend by the only potential challenger, Mazda RX-7 driver Ric Shaw.

"I knew the Commodore V8s would be fast at Sandown, but as long as I can get into the top four or five in qualifying tomorrow I'll be happy," King said.

Class leaders David Wood (Honda Integra Type R), Daryl Coon (Ford Falcon XR6) and Kosi Kalaitzidis (Proton Satria GTi) all made solid starts to wrapping up their titles with fastest times today. James Philip (Ford Falcon XR8) topped the Pennzoil V8 Touring class, in which he trails Warren Millet (Commodore SS).
