GT star Richie Stanaway says he’s more confident heading into the Sandown 500 after taking part in Prodrive’s Supercars test at Winton today.

The Kiwi, who is now back in New Zealand following the European leg of the World Endurance Championship season, took part in the test ahead of his Supercars debut for Super Black Racing at Sandown next month.

It was Stanaway’s second taste of the Super Black Ford this year, having run at Winton during practice for the race meeting back in May, and he says it has left him significantly more confident leading into Sandown, where he will team up with Chris Pither.

“I feel a lot more confident after today than I did after the co-driver session back in May,” he told Motorsport.com.

“It was a good day. I spent a lot of time in the car and did a lot of laps. The seating position is good, so I felt nice and comfortable in the car. Chris and I are roughly the same size, so there are no compromises there.

“We did some pitstop practice, some practice starts, and I’m really starting to get into the groove. The car was great to drive, I really enjoyed it.”

Stanaway added that he’s not putting too much pressure on himself for Sandown given how little experience he has in Supercars, despite having already said he hopes it may lead to a full-time switch to the series in the future

“I still don’t quite know what to expect at Sandown, because Winton is obviously a much different track surface to… well, anywhere we’ll race for the enduros,” he said.

“I don’t know how we’ll stack up against the other co-drivers, and I’m trying not to worry about it too much right now. I’m just worrying about myself, and getting up to speed as quickly as possible.”

Stanaway’s next drive of the Super Black Ford will come during a ride day at Sydney Motorsport Park following the round there in just under a fortnight.
