Super Black Racing has confirmed that it intends to give Chris Pither a drive for the 2016 V8 Supercars season.

Pither has been linked to the SBR seat for some time, the team taking a big step towards giving away its 2016 plans by announcing yesterday that he will drive in place of Andre Heimgartner at Phillip Island this weekend.

Now it seems even more certain that the development series front-runner will get the SBR drive, temporary team boss Rusty French – who is standing in for Tony Lentino who is recovering from cancer treatment – confirming the team’s intention to sign Pither for 2016 during Fox Sport’s TV coverage from Phillip Island.

“What we decided to do, we wanted to do some evaluation of Chris in the car,” French said.

“It was an opportunity, because we’ve got Chris probably coming into the team next year and he hadn’t had a chance to drive one of the Prodrive cars.

“So we’re using this as a weekend to evaluate his position. It’s an opportune time prior to going to Homebush.”

Should plans to sign Pither go ahead, it will be the Kiwi’s first full-time drive in top-tier V8 Supercars racing.
