Supercars ace van Gisbergen set for Blancpain Asia debut
Supercars ace Shane van Gisbergen will make his Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia debut for Triple Eight at Suzuka this weekend.
Van Gisbergen is scheduled to make three starts as part of T8's foray into Asian GT this season, the first of which comes at the renowned Japanese Grand Prix circuit.
Running under the Johor Racing banner, the experienced GT ace will team up with Prince Jefri Ibrahim in the T8-run Mercedes.
It’s great to be here and join Johor Racing at such an iconic track as Suzuka and be part of the GT series in Asia," van Gisbergen said.
"I’m looking forward to the race but first we have a couple of days of practice to learn the car and track before we can have some fun this weekend.
"I am looking forward to racing with Prince Jefri as he has come a long way already as a driver who is only in his first year.
"There is obviously another new circuit for him this weekend, but I’m sure he will adapt and be up to speed in no time."
Prince Jefri Ibrahim, who sits sixth in the Pro/Am standings after competing at the first two round alongside Jazeman Jaafar, added that he's looking forward to learning from van Gisbergen.
“He has always been giving me a lot of tips and advice regarding racing and I’ll be looking forward to learning more from him this weekend,” he said.
“It will also be interesting to see how different the drivers, Jazeman and Shane, are in terms of the set-up of the car, etcetera. So without a doubt I’m definitely going to learn a lot this weekend.”
Practice kicks off today ahead of two hour-long races on Saturday and Sunday and will be shown live on Motorsport.tv for free.
