LEGENDS SEE HISTORY RECREATED ON THE GOLD COAST

History was rewritten on the streets of Surfers Paradise today when Pirtek Australian Legends Allan Moffat and Colin Bond got behind the wheel of their original #1 and #2 XC Ford Falcons to recreate the historic 1-2 form finish from the 1977 Bathurst 1000.

But this time history was not repeated, with Bond crossing the line in a reverse 2-1 finish.

The recreation was a highlight of the Pirtek Australian Legends category, which featured some of the most celebrated names in motor sport driving prized cars in demonstration races on all three days of the Armor All Gold Coast 600. The line-up of legendary drivers also included former Bathurst winners Dick Johnson, Bo Seton, Jim Richards, Tony Longhurst and John French.

Legend Allan Moffat said: "This is a fantastic event to be a part of. It was terrific to recreate probably the most memorable moment in my motor racing career.

"It was great to spend time with the drivers from my era.

"The Bathurst Regional City Council and the National Motor Racing Museum must be congratulated for giving up the car for this weekend.

"The last time we went around it was 1-2, this time around it was 2-1, so I guess the score is even between Colin and myself. Who knows . . . we might have to get together for the decider."

The #1 car is housed at the national Motor Racing Museum in Bathurst and was transported to the Gold Coast for the Legends event.

The almost priceless list of cars on show included Moffat's almost unbeatable Coca-Cola Mustang, Johnson's Bathurst-winning Tru-Blu Falcon, an original Longhurst Sierra, Kevin Bartlett's legendary Channel 9 Camaro, Richard's Bathurst-winning Nissan GT-R and Glenn Seton's title-winning Ford Credit Falcon.

Bartlett said: "It was great to catch up with the 'earlier' brigade again. We all know each other reasonably well and know each other's capabilities.

"The cars are fantastic and the fans love seeing them out on the track again."

A total of nine of the 14 cars that took place in the fast-paced demonstration runs were provided by David Bowden from Buderim on the Sunshine Coast, who has one of the most unique car collections in the world.
