October 26, 2002 - Lansvale Racing Team driver Cameron McConville has finished 10th in the first of two Gillette V8 Supercar races on the streets of Surfers Paradise.

The Lansvale Racing VX Commodore driver was in strong form from the green light, with a fast start, but was held out on the outside line for the tight first chicane, forcing him to let rival Jason Bargwanna past. He then held his 13th starting position until the team elected to make their compulsory pit stop on lap 3.

The Lansvale Racing Team driver emerged from his stop in 19th position and from that point progressed to 17th by lap 9, up to 13th by lap 13 and to 12th by the second last lap.

McConville was later promoted to 10th by the race stewards following post race penalties imposed on Falcon driver Steven Ellery and Holden driver Jason Bargwanna.

The team's strategy to pit early ensured a strong result, albeit that they expected a top ten result at this event considering the team's strong form in practice and qualifying.

This was one of the most exhausting sprint races of the season with cabin temperatures soaring over 60C during the 22 laps. McConville battled with Falcon rivals Steven Johnson and Steven Ellery throughout the race, the drivers avoiding a number of incidents on the tight and fully concrete walled Surfers Paradise Street circuit.

Cameron McConville - "It was a tough race out there with a lot of biff and barge but we managed to stay clear of most of it. We were going strong early on in the race, but started to lose a little bit of brake pressure by mid-race. Overall it was a satisfactory result but it should have been a higher top ten finish. Towards the end Steve Ellery made a desperate move on me and this cost us some track position - he drove across the cones to get past and as far as I understand that's a breach of the regulations."

"For tomorrow's race we need to make our brakes cope with the temperature a little longer and we'll be in for a strong showing from 10th on the grid," He added.

Sydney's only V8 Supercar Team will be back on track tomorrow at 8:25am for a fifteen minute warm up, followed by the second and final Indy V8 Supercar race at 11:15am.
