IRWIN RACING GRABS TOP-10 ON SYDNEY STREETS
IRWIN Racing's Alex Davison has scored a ninth place finish at the final race of the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship, the Sydney Telstra 500 at the Sydney Olympic Park Street Circuit.
In what proved to be by far the toughest race of the 2009 V8 Supercar, four safety cars were called onto the circuit and a total of 13 cars failed to finish. One of the biggest attrition rates in the history of V8 Supercars.
Davison showed outstanding pace in the IRWIN Racing Ford to climb from 16th on the grid to fifth midway through the race.
Great pit strategy was matched with fantastic driving, as Davison raced and passed some of the best teams in the championship.
The IRWIN Racing driver made his final pit stop on lap #38 and re-joined in sixth place. On the opening lap after a re-start, he went wide on one of the turns and slipped-off into a wall.
Despite dropping back to 14th, Davison put his head down and moved back inside the top-10. An enthralling battle then raged with his brother Will, before fading brakes forced Davison to drop his pace through to the finish.
The final result was a great reward for all concerned on the IRWIN Racing program, and importantly provides valuable momentum going into the off-season.
The opening round of the 2010 season will be at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi 18-20 February.
WHAT ALEX DAVISON HAD TO SAY:
"It was a really good performance by everyone on the IRWIN Racing team today. We had the IRWIN Ford working really well and it's always a great feeling to race and pass people on the track. I made a small mistake after one of the re-starts and just went slightly wide, got on the loose stuff and went off into the wall. I got back on track and was pleased to fight back to ninth; that was despite some brake fade at the end. The IRWIN Racing team was very competitive today and that is a great sign. I do set very high goals and have to admit that we did not tick all the boxes this year. Importantly both from a personal, and an IRWIN Racing team point of view, we have the ingredients to get it all done. Importantly we have the people and the machinery to be fighting for top results and even a championship next year."
WHAT IRWIN RACING ENGINEER WES McDOUGALL HAD TO SAY:
"It was fantastic to finish the year in the top-10. It is a nice reward for everyone involved in the IRWIN Racing program. We had a very fast IRWIN Falcon today and Alex drove very well. That allowed us to be aggressive with the pit stop strategy. We had top-five car speed all day and we really had the handle on the IRWIN Ford. We really turned the corner with the changes we made overnight. We need to carry that through to 2010."
WHAT IRWIN RACING TEAM DIRECTOR ROSS STONE HAD TO SAY:
"It is always good to finish the year with some momentum. It allows us to re-group and really look forward to 2010. Drivers need a good year's experience in this series before you see results come their way. I know that Alex has the ability to be successful in this series. Plus some changes here and there within our organisation will give the IRWIN Racing team a very good shot next year."
WHAT IRWIN MANAGING DIRECTOR NICK PRITCHARD HAD TO SAY:
"The IRWIN Racing team made great progress this year. Everyone at IRWIN Industrial Tools is looking forward to the next couple of years and a terrific future with Alex and the entire Stone Brothers Racing team. We all share a passion to be successful. I'm sure that will come on the track and be of enormous benefit to our customers and staff."
