Like yesterday, it was the first run that counted for the Prodrive Racing star. He went top with a 1m29.441s on his first proper lap, before jumping out of the car with five minutes to go, leaving a set of tyres up his sleeve for this afternoon’s 200-kilometre race.
It was a risk that paid off, with no notable improvements on the final resulting in a second pole of the weekend for Mostert.
“The boys have given me a fantastic car this weekend,” said Mostert. “To have five [poles] for the year is fantastic, but I really want to get that win. Hopefully saving that set of tyres will help us out today.
Shane van Gisbergen went closest to knocking Mostert off, the Red Bull Racing driver falling just 0.03s short. The Kiwi did head out at the end of the session, but there was no improvement to be found.
The other two Triple Eight cars finished the session third and fourth, both Jamie Whincup (P3) and Craig Lowndes (P4) opting not to do a final run.
The Volvos were next in line, Scott McLaughlin narrowly holding off team-mate James Moffat for fifth. There were two Nissans in the Top 10 as well (Rick Kelly seventh and Michael Caruso ninth), as well as both DJR Team Penske cars (Scott Pye eighth and Fabian Coulthard 10th).
Title contender Mark Winterbottom’s average weekend continued with P11, while James Courtney ruined his own chances of improving on the final run by running too wide and exceeding track limits. The #22 HRT Commodore will start 12th.
