TeamVodafone set for battle in Tasmania

With just three rounds left in the V8 Supercars Championship Series, TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes are feeling the heat as they head into this weekend's Falken Tasmania Challenge at Symmons Plains.

The battle at the top of the table is beginning to intensify, and Saturday's 120km and Sunday's 200km races could prove telling as the season comes to a close.

Defending V8 Supercar Champion Whincup is currently second on the leaderboard, just 71 points away from forerunner James Courtney, while Lowndes is third.

Whincup, who won the Sunday race at Symmons Plains last year, is looking to replicate his success on the short yet swift track.

Buoyed by his recent win at the Gold Coast, Whincup said he was feeling quietly confident about this weekend's race and was eager to gain valuable championship points.

"I'm feeling positive following my win on the Gold Coast but the Tassie track is short and less technical, which makes it a bit tougher to race on," Whincup said.

"We're really close to the finale of the championship and this weekend is really important. There will be 300 points up for grabs this weekend so we're looking to gain as many as possible.

"I think the competition is going to be tough but the cars are extremely fast and we have always done well in Tassie," he stated.

Lowndes, a five-time winner at Symmons Plains, agreed with his teammate and said the track will present a challenge for the drivers.

"The track is going to be a real killer on the brakes because there are two really heavy braking areas about 30 seconds apart," said Lowndes.

"On a shorter track there's always the issue of lap traffic and it's also really easy to lose a lap if you have a bad pit-stop, which could be detrimental.

"It's going to be a tricky one and it could put a dent in the championship hopes of contenders. It's really make or break." he added.

The Falken Tasmania Challenge will kick off with Practice this Friday at Symmons Plains.
