Triple Eight Race Engineering, the organisation behind TeamVodafone, has gone to proactive lengths to further improve the safety aspects of their racecars.
As a supplier to a number of other V8 Supercar teams, a formal review of Steve Owen’s damaged VE Commodore was conducted following the fiery Race 8 start line incident at Perth’s Barbagallo Raceway earlier this month.
Triple Eight took the opportunity to evaluate the damage sustained to the vehicle during the impact and as such, have implemented a series of modifications based on the knowledge gained.
Technical Director, Ludo Lacroix, along with Director of Engineering and Production, John Russell and TeamVodafone Principle, Adrian Burgess reviewed all of the in-car components from the #49 VIP Petfoods Commodore to gain a better understanding of how they reacted to the impact.
“Testament to the initiatives on safety by V8 Supercars and the work other teams have done in this area, it was extremely satisfying to see both drivers walk away,” Burgess said. “Nonetheless we can always learn and we are always striving to improve on safety.
“It is extremely rare that you get an incident like this and took the opportunity to learn from it and did an extensive review of Steve’s car.
“While the car reacted to the impact as it should, we have taken the proactive approach and have modified a number of components to allow the driver to evacuate the car quicker and safer. We have also improved the fuel cell integrity and installation,” Burgess explained.
The modifications have been made to both TeamVodafone VE Commodores and will be available to Triple Eight Race Engineering customers ahead of this weekends V8 Supercar event at Winton Motor Raceway.
