Loadsman claims first Production Car points for Holden in Adelaide street race.
Sydney's Scott Loadsman, driving a Holden Commodore SS, scored the first points in the 2003 Australian Production Car Championship with a win in the first leg of round one in Adelaide today.
Loadsman, the fastest qualifier, started with a 13 second handicap in 10th grid position but worked his way to the lead on the fifth of eight laps.
He had to battle his way past a variety of cars, including the tiny Class D Daihatsu Sirion of Rick Bates which had started from pole position under the handicap system and led the field for most of the first two laps.
In a lively race, the lead passed from Bates to David Russell (Proton) to Steven Grocl (Volkswagen) before Loadsman's Class A V8 sedan surged to first place on the back straight.
There also were close midfield contests between 16-year-old Chris Alajaglian (BMW), David Ratcliff (Toyota Celica) and Geoff Russell (Toyota).
Loadsman, the 2002 V8 Class champion, took the finish 2.5 sec. ahead of the Class B Volkswagen Beetle of Grocl, who managed to hold off the fast-finishing V8 Ford Falcons of John McIlroy and series newcomer Craig Bradshaw.
"This is a great start to our championship. There are six more rounds to run this year, but it's always good to get early points. The Commodore ran perfectly today," Loadsman said.
Round one, presented by Eagle Boys, will conclude with a seven-lap race tomorrow afternoon.
Ferrari power puts Bowe on top
A new engine helped lift John Bowe's Ferrari 360GT to the top of the timesheets in the second practice session for round one of the Australian Nations Cup Championship.
Problems with the Italian coupe's V8 engine kept Bowe in fifth spot yesterday, but a new unit fitted overnight by the PHR Scuderia crew saw his best lap time improve by 3.6 seconds and by 0.3sec. over his 2002 pole position mark.
Tasmanian Greg Crick, fastest yesterday in his recently-acquired Chrysler Viper, slipped to second place but also significantly improved his time in preparation for qualifying and two races presented by Cleanevent tomorrow.
Jim Richards retained third on the provisional grid, ahead of Paul Stokell (Lamborghini) and Nathan Pretty (Holden Monaro).
Alan Simonsen, from Denmark, was the fastest Group Two competitor in a Ferrari 360 Challenge.
Shaw's Mazda in GT Performance pole position
Mazda RX-7 expert Ric Shaw qualified in pole position for tomorrow's first leg race in round one of the Australian GT Performance Championship, presented by Donut Kng.
After a wet practice session yesterday, GT Performance lap times were more than 10 seconds faster in today's dry conditions and the regular order of competitors emerged.
Peter Floyd was fortunate to grab second grid spot in early in the qualifying session before a a crash into the wall on the back straight put his Holden HSV GTS sedan out for the rest of the day.
The car was badly damaged, but Floyd's team were attempting to repair it in time for the nine-lapper at 10 am tomorrow.
Mark King, in third, was the fastest of three all-wheel drive Mitsubishi Lancers in the top six.
Luff fastest in V8 BRutes session
Ford Falcon XR8 driver and defending champion Warren Luff topped qualifying for the opening round of the Poolrite V8 BRutes Series, but a ballot for starting positions saw local driver Gary Baxter claim pole position for Holden.
Luff's lap time of 1 minute 40.10 was 1.2 seconds faster than his 2002 pole position mark.
Damien White (Falcon) was the second-fastest qualifier for tomorrow's seven-lap first race, ahead of Baxter and Charles Kovacs (Holden).
