Bowe Nabs Nations Cup Pole For Ferrari.

JOHN Bowe looks set to boost his lead in the Australian Nations Cup Championship after blitzing the field - and the race lap record - in his $750,000 Ferrari coupe during qualifying for round five at Queensland Raceway, Ipswich, today.

Bowe, driving for Melbourne-based PHR Scuderia, set a time of 1 minute 12.09 seconds around the 3.12 km track, almost a second faster than Geoff Morgan, who holds the year-old lap record of 1:14.06 in his Chrysler Viper.

Defending Nations Cup Champion Jim Richards was third-fastest today, in the first of four Porsche GT3 Cup coupes.

Bowe leads the 2002 series with 618 points to Richards' 555 and in tomorrow's three races will be without the challenge of round four winner Paul Stokell, who has withdrawn his Lamborghini from the Queensland event.

But the touring car ace does not expect an easy run, as Morgan and his big American V10 machine should be at their best on the two long straights at Ipswich.

"Geoff's car has massive power and he's been very successful with it this year. The Ferrari was able to show its pace today over one qualifying lap but tomorrow I have to string together three races of 16 laps each and that will definitely be a bigger challenge," Bowe said.

The exotic Nations Cup cars will be the highlight of a 14-race program tomorrow for the PROCAR Champ Series event.

Other races will feature the Australian GT Performance and Production Car Championships and the V8 BRute Series. The popular BRutes will be supported off-track by the Personalised Plates Ute Muster, with fans expected to bring hundreds of road utes for contests in seven categories.

Qualifying for the GT Performance Championship produced the closest contest of the day, with the fastest six cars all within 0.39 seconds.

David Wood, from Melbourne, took pole position honours in a Subaru STi, adding one point to his championship points tally in pursuit of Queenslander Brett Peters, who was second today in another Subaru.
