Top Ten Cracker for Wimmer in Darwin

A lack of grunt restrained Wilson Brothers Racing's Kurt Wimmer from a charge to the lead in the Blackwidow Fireworks VE Holden Ute at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway for the latest round of the Yokohama V8 Utes Series.

Struggling for top speed on the 1.1km long front straight, Wimmer did everything within his power to stick with the leaders, coming home eighth overall for the weekend and sixth in the final race for the weekend.

Team principal Cam Wilson is looking forward to the next round with a fresh power plant under the bonnet of the number 32 ute.

"The engine in the car has done a fantastic job, with Kurt winning numerous races with it, but unfortunately there just wasn't time for it to be rebuilt after the Tasmanian round," said Wilson.

"The new control engine builder has been inundated with work, but we'll make sure the package is back on the money for the next round on the streets of Townsville."

Wimmer qualified in 15th position out of 32 starters, unable to hook up a slipstream with some of the leading Holdens during the 20 minute long session.

A rocket start in race one saw the Blackwidow Fireworks machine jump up the order to be running in 11th by the first corner, however overtaking opportunities were at a premium, and Wimmer had to settle for 10th at the finish.

With the top 16 inverted for the start of race two, Wimmer once again made a quick getaway to be running in fourth after the first corner, and was right in the midst of the action in the live television race.

Despite making his Holden as wide as possible, the lack of grunt down the straight was noticeable, with the car drifting back to 11th, before making it back by Stephen Robinson in the closing stages to be classified in ninth at the chequered flag.

In the finale, Wimmer drove a skillful race to dodge the carnage around him, finishing in sixth after an eventful 12 lap long encounter.

Wimmer now has his sights set on a strong challenge for the podium at the next round on the streets of Townsville.

"To come away from Darwin with a solid points haul is a bonus considering how much we were lacking in top end speed," said Wimmer.

"Darwin was once again a new track for me, however the next round in Townsville will be new for everyone and a level playing field, and with more grunt, we should be on the money again.

"I would like to thank Blackwidow Fireworks for coming on board for the weekend; I think they received some good bang for their buck out there!"
