Crambrook Takes Championship Lead at Bathurst in the V8 Utes

Holden drivers Grant Johnson and Kim Jane won Race 1 and Race 2 consecutively in Round 7 of the 2009 Yokohama V8 Ute Racing Series – protected by Armor All at Mount Panorama, Bathurst, Saturday, 10th October.

Johnson claimed the win in race 1 after two major incidents, one involving a bump from Charlie Kovacs into Ben Kavich, which caused the Workhorse Collision Repairs Ford to soar into the wall and his bonnet to fly open – destroying the front and side of his car.

"We'd just put a new engine in, so it was disappointing that this had to end our weekend," said Kavich.

As a result of this Kovacs was penalized and was forced to move back from 5th to 32nd grid position for the next race.

WA Lifting's Allan Letcher was watching the incident in his rearview mirror and decided to move out of the way before he was hit, unfortunately it didn't all go to plan and he drifted across the Chase barrel rolling six times before stopping.

This was the 13th time he has raced at Bathurst and the first time he has crashed.

Letcher was checked over by the medical team and was all ok. The same couldn't be said for his car, which was completely destroyed.

Layton Crambrook came in second and claimed a new track record in a time of 2:24.42 just 400ths of a second faster than Armor All Pole Award winner, George Miedecke.

Jack Elsegood was the next over the line followed by Gary Baxter, Andrew Fisher, Craig Dontas, Gary MacDonald, Kim Jane and Kurt Wimmer who rounded out the top ten.

In Race 2 Scott Jennings had his first pole at Bathurst after claiming 16th in Race 1, which put him at the principle spot for the top 16 reversed grid race.

Jennings didn't have the best start and was struggling with brake issues pushing him back to finish in 10th overall.

Kim Jane moved through the pack early from his 8th grid start position and was soon on Ryal Harris's tail who was leading from the outset. Jane saw the moment when Harris missed a gear and passed him on Forests Elbow.

"He changed up to second and I saw my opportunity and took it. I never expected the win. I wasn't having the best weekend but that made up for it," said Jane.

Gary MacDonald was also close on Harris's tail and overtook him going down the chase on the last lap giving him second place ahead of Harris who ended in third.

Jesus All About Life Racings Andrew Fisher, Craig Dontas and Johnson collided when they tried to pass each other at the same time at Griffins Bend (the top of mountain straight), Johnson came out on top claiming sixth position just behind George Miedecke and Queenslander Kurt Wimmer.

Glenn McNally did well to keep his position ahead of Fisher and Dontas to round out seventh, eighth and ninth position.

Series leader Jack Elsegood and challenger Layton Crambrook toughed it out a number of times before both ended up off track.

"Layton hit me first going up the hill, and then when I was driving down the chase I went from 4th to 6th gear and tagged the back of Layton's ute taking us both off," he said.

Crambrook was lucky enough to still finish in 12th overall but Elsegood finished 17th and then was hit with a post race time penalty for the incident with Crambrook. Nandi Kiss and Justin Van Twest were also delivered post race penalties.

Race 3 will be televised live on Network Seven, tomorrow (Sunday, 11th October) morning at 7:20am.
