Wimmer's Powerful Podium at Sandown

Kurt Wimmer's new engine was worth its weight in gold, with the new power plant putting the Wilson Brothers Racing- Racing For A Cure VE Holden Ute back on the V8 Ute Racing Series podium at Sandown on the weekend.

Wimmer dodged the carnage around him, with his second place behind Kim Jane in the final race placing him second overall for the round, a position that could have been bettered had the second of three races run its full length and paid points.

Wimmer's number 32 ute was just ahead of fellow Queenslander Steve Robinson at turn one when Robinson's Ford Ute was involved in an incident and spectacularly barrel rolled, with the resulting clean up seeing the race shortened and declared a non-event.

Regardless, the result shows that Wimmer is still a force to be reckoned with, especially coming into the penultimate round of the series at Bathurst, where Wimmer was a race winner in 2008.

"It was good having the new engine on board for Sandown, it really made a difference and we had the same power as the other leaders out there," said Wimmer.

"We had to make some radical changes to the car after practice to try and deal with the extra power, but after that it was really good."

At the start of the third race there was the usual biff and barge into the first corner, which saw the left hand side of the car extensively damaged.

"I copped a hit at the first corner trying to avoid George Miedecke, it broke the window and there was glass flying through the cabin.

"I kept pushing hard to the end, and when I saw it back in the pits, I couldn't believe the amount of damage; that was expensive!"

Wilson Brothers Racing- Racing for a Cure team principal Cameron Wilson was pleased to see his charge back at the top of his game.

"It was sensational to get a strong result at Sandown, especially having Cure Cancer Australia on board for the first time," said Wilson.

"The new engine was really good, Kurt was driving very well indeed, and the set up changes in the car worked a treat, it really puts us in good shape for the last couple of rounds of the year at Bathurst and Homebush."
