Top Two in Townsville for Wimmer

After a frantic three races on the streets of Townsville, Kurt Wimmer came away with a best race result of second, and importantly, a straight Wilson Brothers Racing prepared VE Holden Ute.

A major frustration for Wimmer over the course of the weekend was repeated safety car interventions, which disrupted the flow of the racing.

After qualifying in 12th position, Wimmer charged through to ninth in the opening encounter before Justin Van Twest crashed at top speed due to a major brake failure, resulting in only four full speed racing laps instead of the of the scheduled nine.

With the top 16 finishers from race one inverted for race two, Wimmer started in eighth, but quickly charged through to second behind Ryal Harris.

A mid-race safety car bunched the field, and ultimately saw the race shorted by a lap.

"We were right on Ryal coming into what we thought was the last lap," said Wimmer.

"If the race had gone the full distance I think we would have been able to make a move for the lead, but that's racing!

"Still, second place is a solid result, and great for the local businesses that have come onboard for the weekend, especially John Muller Tyres Plus, RLS Data and Electrical, Gametraders, Cheapa Auto Spares, Simulator Raceway and the Digimen.

"The fans up here just went nuts for the V8 Utes, and we are really looking forward to coming back next year."

The third and final race was a frustrating affair, with Wimmer forced out wide over a ripple strip in the opening skirmishes, damaging the suspension and making the number 32 ute a handful on the tight concrete lined circuit.

Seventh from the race meant seventh overall for the weekend, and a solid points haul with many other leading contenders caught up in carnage.

Team principal Cameron Wilson was pleased with the effort, but looking forward to the next round of the championship, where he hopes to see Wimmer return to his winning ways.

"We'll be getting our brand new engine installed before Sandown, and with it being a horsepower circuit, we plan on using every bit of grunt we can get," said Wilson.

"I'm really glad the local sponsors that came on board had such a fantastic weekend, and it was great for Kurt to put the car on the podium for them."

A new major sponsor for the Wilson Brothers Racing outfit will be announced in the coming weeks, with the Sandown round scheduled for August 1-2.
