V8 Supercars will be heading back to the Middle East next season with a round in Dubai, according to newspaper reports.

The Gold Coast Bulletin has reported that Dubai will be the next international destination added to the V8 Supercars schedule, with plans to race at the Dubai Autodrome next season.

A Dubai deal would mean a return to the Middle East, the category having staged four races at Bahrain International Circuit and three at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, the last in 2012.

The news comes after V8 Supercars last year announced plans for a new race in Asia for 2017, at a yet-to-be-completed facility. The Dubai facility, however, has been operational for more than a decade.

Virgin adds commercial weight

The Gold Coast Bulletin story also suggests that V8 Supercars is set to sign on a proper naming rights sponsor.

The report says Virgin Australia will become a multi-million dollar naming-rights backer of the category, the first since the days of the Shell Championship Series back in the 1990s.

While the Virgin deal is speculation at this point, the category did confirm a new sponsorship deal today. Fast food outlet Red Rooster has signed on as naming-rights backer of the Sydney Motorsport Park SuperSprint, as part of a three-year deal that will include Red Rooster’s food being available at all rounds.
