For those who yearn to race in the Monterey Historics, read on. If you think you have a car that would qualify, write to the following address (after Jan. 1) and request a membership packet. Fill out the forms, get a physical, and send it all in with $$ and photos of the car. If you have a medical card from another racing group, (VARA, CSRG, SCCA etc.) you don't need a separate physical for the Historics. Note that the Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA) is the sanctioning body, and General Racing Ltd. is the business organization. The Monterey Historics are definitely run for profit. You have to be a member of HMSA to run in any of the events. The club events are more like private affairs, as run in other clubs (CSRG, VARA). The Wine Country Classic and the Historics are definitely spectator events. There are 5 events on the HMSA 95 calendar:
March 4-5 Laguna Seca club event June 9-11 Wine Country Classic, Sears Point August 12-13 The "Pre-Historics", Laguna Seca club event August 17-20 Monterey Historics, Laguna Seca November 4-5 Laguna Seca club event
I highly recommend the Wine Country classic, both from a spectator and a participant point of view. There was plenty of track time, and there were nice things for spectators to see and do. The crowds weren't nearly as thick as at Monterey. The 95 Wine Country Classic will feature Cobra, and the team's 1965 FIA World Sports Car Manufacturer's Championship.
The Historics are a pain, but they are the high point of the Vintage racing season on the West Coast. You pay a lot, and get very little track time, and the crowds are massive, but what a spectacle. The 1995 Historics will feature Lotus. They say they will not be running a Formula Ford group, but they will select some Lotus 51's. They will probably get put in my run group, with the Formula Juniors. I will be signing up for the Wine Country Classic, and the Historics with my Fiat-powered Borgeault Formula Junior.
