WEST PALM BEACH, FL (January 23). Ed Davies and Todd Morici were the overall race winners for the first round of the 2004 North American Shell Ferrari/Maserati Historic Challenge. The races were held at Moroso Motorsports Park here as part of the Cavallino Classic Ferrari festival.

Davies, driving a Ferrari 375 MM Spyder, beat Peter Sachs in his Ferrari 335 Sport to win the Drum Brake Group by a margin of 18/1000 second, the closest finish ever in the series. Morici had an easier time in his Ferrari 512 BB/LM in the Disc Brake Group, finishing almost a full minute ahead of second place John Giordano driving a Ferrari 512 S Berlinetta. Both Davies and Morici are past series champions.

Perennial winner Peter Giddings, also a past champion, won the Pre-War class in the Drum Group driving an Alfa Romeo 8C/35. Tom Price (Maserati 200 SI) Davies, and Sachs were other class winners among the drum cars.

Class winners in the disc field included Morici and Giordano as well as Sachs again, this time driving a Ferrari 365 P2, Davies again, now in a Ferrari 250 SWB/Comp, Stephen Dudley (Ferrari 308 GT/M), and Charlie Arnott, Jr. driving a Ferrari Competition Daytona.

Awards from the races will be presented at a dinner at Palm Beach's famed Breakers Hotel on Saturday, January 24. 2003 Champions Stephen Dudley (Drum Brake Group) and Bill Noon (Disc Brake Group) will also receive their awards at that time.

The next event in the 2004 Shell Ferrari/Maserati Historic Challenge will be held at the Infineon Raceway in California, on March 20/21.
