Historic racers go bush.
HRCC Historic Morgan Park, 17-18 May 2003
The Historic Racing Car Club of Queensland (HRCC), never afraid to shy away from something new, will this year be holding their no-frills race meeting at the provincial Morgan Park circuit, just outside of the Darling Downs town of Warwick on May 17-18.
Organisers expect this to be the biggest ever meeting held at the circuit, with a field of over 200 cars a distinct possibility.
A major feature of the meeting will be the utilisation of multiple racing formats.
Not only will there be scratch and handicap races, but also 6-car supersprints and regularity trials, ensuring something for all prospective competitors.
Historic motor racing is the most rapidly expanding sector of amateur motorsport, not only in Australia, but also around the world.
Two of the most crowd-pleasing classes will be the Historic Touring Cars, and the Historic Sports Cars.
The Touring Cars will include vehicles dating from 1972, back to the 1950s.
Two of the most popular types of cars on the entry list will be the Holden Torana XU-1s, and the Morris Cooper S brigade; however, many different cars from big V8s through to rotary Mazda RX2s will support them.
The Historic Sports cars will be another mixed bag, with something for everybody.
Exotics such as Ferraris and Porsches may be joined on the grid by classics such as MGs and Datsun 240Zs.
The corresponding meeting last year attracted a great field of cars, and some incredibly close racing.
For many competitors, it will be their first visit to the picturesque little circuit, and the many tight and twisty corners will be a pleasant surprise, as well as the famous country hospitality.
The circuit was extended in 2002 to include up to five layouts, with the HRCC choosing the longest and most demanding 2.11km layout for their meeting.
Some features of the track include 14 metres of elevation changes, and a longest straight of 430 metres.
The average speed of the lap record is over 120km/h.
Events at the circuit since last September have booked out accommodation in Warwick fast, so competitors are advised to make prompt bookings.
Competitors can expect to get one qualifying or practice session on Saturday, and four races over the weekend.
The Warwick District Sporting Car Club has installed many new carports over the summer break, although these will be filled quickly.
Entry forms are available for download from the HRCC website at www.hrcc.org.au.
