October 7
Henri Oreiller dies in an accident during the Coupe de Salon at Montlhery, France. Only fatality ever suffered by the driver of a Ferrari 250 GTO (1962).

October 8
Arturo Merzario drives an Alfa Romeo T33/SC/12 to victory in the Interseries race at Hockenheim, Germany. Final race for the T33 series, which began 10 years earlier (1977).

October 9
George Robertson drives a Simplex "90" to victory in the 200 miles AAA Championship race in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA (1909).

October 10
The Ferrari 333SP driven by Eric van de Poele, Wayne Taylor, and Emmanuel Collard wins the first Petite Le Mans endurance race at Road Atlanta in Brazelton, Georgia, USA (1998).

October 11
Jim White sets an NHRA Funny Car top seep record of 290.13 mph at Dallas, Texas, USA (1991).

October 12
Bruce McLaren wins and Denny Hulme is second, both driving McLaren M8B-Chevrolets, in the Laguna Seca, California, USA, Can-Am race. It is the seventh 1-2 finish by Team McLaren during the season (1969).

October 13
Work begins on the new Panoz Motor Sports world headquarters at Road Atlanta in Brazelton, Georgia, USA (1997).
