Greg Stansfield sets an NHRA Pro Stock Truck eleapse time record of 7.438 seconds and a speed record of 180.69 mph for the 1/4 mile at Memphis, Tennesee, USA (2000).

George Heath drives a Panhard to victory in the first Vanderbilt Cup Race, on Long Island, New York, USA (1904).
October 9
Dewayne "Tiny" Lund races in his first NASCAR sanctioned race, at Lehi, Arkansas, USA (1955).
October 10
Giuseppi Campari, Baconin Borzacchini, and Count Stanislas Czaykowski dies in two separate accidents during the Monza Grand Prix at Monza, Italy (1933).

Don Garlits runs the 1/4-mile in 5.636 seconds at 250.69 mph in a fuel dragster. This elapse time record will stand for six years and the top speed record for 9 years (1975).
