Primat scores career-best Le Mans result

Harold Primat notched up his best ever Le Mans 24 Hours result at La Sarthe on Sunday afternoon, finishing sixth overall after a problem prevented the Aston Martin Racing factory driver from claiming a potential fourth place.

Primat's crew, completed by co-drivers Adrian Fernandez and Stefan Mucke, had consistently proved the fastest petrol-powered trio on track throughout the week-long event and underlined their pace by qualifying eighth overall just behind the seven diesel entries.

A quick, consistent and trouble-free run throughout the afternoon, night and into Sunday morning ensured that the #007 LMP1 coupe had moved up two spots to sixth by the time dawn broke. But just after 7am a gearbox-related issue forced the car into the pits where it remained for over an hour before eventually rejoining well-down the order.

"Considering how much work was needed in the pits, the team did an unbelievable job to give us enough time to climb back up through the field," said Harold.

Over the next six hours, 007 battled its way back up the order to take the chequered flag fifth in LMP1 and sixth overall, Harold's best-ever result in his six appearances at the twice-round-the-clock enduro.

"The aim was to have a clean race without making any mistakes and be the fastest of the petrol cars, which was the case," Harold continued. "My team mates as well as the whole team did a really good job so it was just a bit unfortunate that we had the problem. But I cannot be disappointed as that's still my best ever result at Le Mans. It's definitely a big positive to take from such a long race, especially as it could have been over by 9am."

Primat added that the 12 months since last year's Le Mans had seen him improve behind the wheel.

"I feel like I've made progress since 2009 and that my performance was better this season," he admitted. "My lap times were definitely quicker so in that respect I'm reaching the targets I set myself, because as a driver you're always looking to improve and be the best that you can. I'm working hard to push myself further.

"I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank all my partners and fans that have supported me over the years."

Harold's 2010 programme continues at Silverstone's 1000km classic as part of the Le Mans Series on September 12, where he will again compete for Aston Martin Racing.
