Drivers in 24 Hours of Le Mans should be familiar to ALMS fans

The drivers who will be competing in the 70th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans June 15-16 should be familiar to fans of the American Le Mans Series as 101 of the 150 drivers have experience in ALMS events.

The American Le Mans Series began in 1999 and is a series of sports car races in North America based on the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The series operates on an agreement with the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), organizers of the 24-hour event at the famed Circuit de la Sarthe in France.

The 101 drivers have amassed 846 ALMS starts, taking 134 wins, 332 top three "podium" finishes, 483 top five finishes, and 713 top 10 finishes. They have achieved Fast Qualifier honors 64 times and have posted 57 Fast Laps. Thirty-three of the 101 drivers have taken at least one ALMS victory.

The 101 ALMS-experienced drivers include 78 drivers with previous experience in the Le Mans 24 Hours classic. These 78 drivers have amassed 383 Le Mans 24 Hours starts, scoring 42 class wins. Eleven of the 78 drivers have won the classic overall a total of 18 times.

There will be 24 American drivers competing at Le Mans, and 31 of the 50 teams in the race also competed in the Sebring 12-hour race that opened the 2002 American Le Mans Series season in March.

American race fans will be able to watch live coverage of 14 of the 24 hours of the race on the SPEED Channel. Complete live coverage by the Radio Le Mans team can be heard online at www.radiolemans.com. Radio Le Mans coverage will begin at noon (Le Mans time) on Wednesday, June 12.

The next race for the American Le Mans Series will be at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, on Sunday, June 30.
