Petersen/ White Lightning Faces First Crisis of Weekend With Broken Shifter Cable

LE MANS, France, June 13, 2004 -- The No. 90 Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR returned to the famous Circuit Des 24 Heures Du Mans after a 20-minute stay in the garage to repair a broken shifter cable. Driver Jorg Bergmeister reported that the transmission had locked into 4th gear without warning at 2:20 am (02:20) and entered into the Petersen garage at 2:24. The stellar operation, led by crew chief Stefan Pfeiffer and lead technician Kent Moore, diagnosed the broken shifter linkage quickly and immediately began to affect the needed repairs. A second group of Petersen/ White Lightning technicians headed-up a planned brake pad change on all four corners while a third began the steps towards completing a standard pit stop for fuel, Michelin tires and a driver change. Bergmeister stepped out of the No. 90 and Patrick Long (Oak Park, Calif.) stepped-in.

The Westward Ho Casino/ MMPIE/ PAWS/ mail2web.com/ Michelin Porsche returned to the track having lost only three laps to the new leader after enjoying a two lap lead. The team dropped to second in class (19th overall) for the first time since the first hour of the event. A stellar effort for the Las Vegas-based race team kept the car of Bergmeister, Long and Sascha Maassen (Raeren, Belgium) within striking distance with more than half of the race remaining. Long immediately showed speed turning laps at the same speed he had in his first session behind the wheel today.

With the scheduled brake pad change complete, barring any further unforeseen problems, the Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing Porsche will have to return to the pit lane for only fuel, new Michelin tires and driver changes for the remaining 13 hours of the 72nd Annual 24 Heures Du Mans.

Jorg Bergmeister: "The car stuck in fourth gear without any warning. I had no idea this was going to happen."

Dale White, team manager: "This is exactly why we build in redundancies. You want to be prepared for anything that can happen. We always build in an additional shifter cable for times just like this. We are definitely disappointed that we lost the lead and that we are three laps down to the leader but we still have a long way to go. The crew did an incredible job getting the car back on track and I am still very confident."
