Vergne targets Le Mans and Indy debuts

The current Techeetah Formula E driver, who is part of the French investment arm of the new team, tested a Toyota LMP1 last year with a view to racing for the Toyota Gazoo Racing squad.

“I know there are two races that I will do in my life, and these are Le Mans and Indianapolis,” Vergne told Motorsport.com last weekend in Marrakesh.

“I am determined to do these races, they are on my ‘bucket list’.”

Vergne’s Toyota test, which came at Paul Ricard along with fellow former F1 racer Adrian Sutil, was an experience which the Frenchman enjoyed - but ultimately a chance to race for the Japanese marque did not materialise.

“I think they [LMP1] are amazing cars, not much slower than a Formula 1 car," Vergne added. "I really like that car [Toyota] and I would have liked to have raced it."

Vergne was realistic about his chances of racing in LMP1 in the short-term ,but does not rule out a top LMP2 drive in the coming seasons.

“To be honest, I am aware that there are many good and experienced drivers that have no seats for next year so seats are going to be tough to get,” opined Vergne.

“We will see what happens but I am open to starting in LMP2 before I get an opportunity in LMP1.

"I had the opportunity to do LMP1 but couldn’t because of my work with Ferrari and I think that was a good choice.”
