World of Outlaws Sprint Series At A Glance: 2006 Season Opener at Volusia Speedway Park

WHAT
The World of Outlaws Sprint Series launches its 29th season with two separate $51,600 events paying $10,000 to the winner on Thursday and Friday during the 35th Annual Winternationals at Volusia Speedway Park near Barberville, Fla., about 20 miles from Daytona Beach. In addition, many of the Mean 15 racers also will be competing against the All Star Circuit of Champions in events on Feb. 7-8 and Feb. 11-12 during Volusia's Race Weeks.

WHERE
Volusia Speedway Park is 15 miles west of I-95 on State Road 40, near the junction with State Road 11.

WHEN
Come early, stay late. On Thursday following a media conference at 3 p.m., the World of Outlaws will feature an autograph party at 4:30 p.m. The autographs will give way to qualifying and racing, then following the A-main, fans are encouraged to head to the hospitality area for The Outdoor Channel's "Elbows Up!" program featuring several Mean 15 racers with hosts John Gibson and Brad Doty and special guest Ernie Saxton. On Friday, fans are encouraged to come out and support their favorite racer in the Mean 15 Kart Clash at the Volusia Speedway Park go-kart track. The World of Outlaws racers will be available for autographs and pictures while the action is taking place on the renovated go-kart track. The kart event and autograph party will lead into qualifying and racing.

ON TELEVISION
The Outdoor Channel will air at 8 p.m. Eastern on Feb. 22 a new "Elbows Up!" program with several Mean 15 racers being interviewed by hosts John Gibson and Brad Doty, along with special guest Ernie Saxton. Then at 8 p.m. Eastern on March 1, The Outdoor Channel will air all the action from the World of Outlaws Sprint Series season-opening events during the 35th Annual Winternationals at Volusia Speedway Park.

Primetime Racers: DIRT MotorSports has secured up to 50 weeks of primetime programming dedicated to the World of Outlaws Sprint Series in 2006 on The Outdoor Channel. In addition to the on-track action, The Outdoor Channel also will televise the new "Elbows Up!" interview program with hosts John Gibson and Brad Doty and a special guest.


Winter winners: Donny Schatz was the hottest Mean 15 racer during the winter, earning eight victories -- including seven in a row during one stretch -- while competing in Australia. Not to be outdone, Australia native and Mean 15 racer Brooke Tatnell captured the World Series Sprintcars title as well as the Australia Sprintcar Championship crown. Mean 15 racers Craig Dollansky and Daryn Pittman also posted wins and strong finishes, with Dollansky winning in New Zealand while Pittman picked up a victory in Australia. Back in the United States, Mean 15 racer Terry McCarl proved he was ready for 2006 by dominating at East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa, Fla. McCarl picked up a victory in a 360 event and repeated the feat in the 410 race, earning a $5,000 bonus to give him $25,000 over the two events.


Half-mile winners: Volusia Speedway Park features a semi-banked half-mile oval. In 2005, the World of Outlaws raced on half-mile ovals 37 times, including preliminary features. Donny Schatz posted four victories (The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Route 66 Raceway, Calistoga Speedway and Williams Grove Speedway), Craig Dollansky won twice (Manzanita Speedway and Williams Grove), Daryn Pittman won once (Jackson Speedway) and Jac Haudenschild won once (Eldora Speedway).

UPCOMING EVENTS
The World of Outlaws Sprint Series heads West after opening the season at Volusia Speedway Park. The series will compete in the annual Cactus Classic on March 3 at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, then make its inaugural appearance at USA Race Park on March 4 in Tucson. Autograph sessions with several of the Mean 15 racers at 4:30 p.m. will precede both of the Arizona events. The Outlaws then invade The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for a two-day show March 9-10 in conjunction with the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series weekend. The Mean 15 racers will sign autographs and meet fans at 2:30 p.m. March 10 near the midway of the LVMS 1.5 mile oval, shortly before qualifying for NASCAR events.
