Blaney Wins Williams Grove Opener With Daring Pass By Richard Day MECHANICSBURG, PA (August 3) - Dave Blaney is becoming a more aggressive driver as he battles to retain the lead in the Skoal Outlaw Series points race. He executed a daring inside move to pass Stevie Smith for the runner-up spot during a 17th-lap restart at Battleground Speedway on July 28th. He passed polesitter Billy Pauch with a similar move in lapped traffic late in the same lap Thursday to win the World of Outlaws' Preliminary Feature at Williams Grove Speedway. When asked about the pass for the lead, "The Buckeye Bullet" said, "It was just a situation where Pauch and I were going for the same spot at the same time. We touched, but it didn't feel like much contact to me." The partisan Pennsylvania crowd booed, but Blaney was $4,000 richer with his second Preliminary Feature victory of the year. Mark Kinser appeared to be the class of the field early, earning his 17th EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the Year for pacing the qualifying session. His 17.932-second run was the only sub-18-second lap of the evening. He was leading with two laps remaining in the Vivarin Dash when the #5M Wirtgen Maxim slowed with a broken torsion arm. Although he continued racing, Mark was relegated to seventh place and a fourth-row starting position in the Preliminary Feature. Pauch earned the right to start the feature on the pole by beating Blaney across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. He burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the evening's main event, and opened a three-car-length advantage as Kinser took the high road around Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Steve Smith for sixth place late in the second lap. Although Pauch rode the rim to a four-car-length lead during the fourth lap, Blaney kept the #10 Vivarin J&J in the low groove and caught the leader the next time around. After chasing Pauch for five laps, "The Buckeye Bullet" raced into the lead in turn three only to have the move nullified when Lance DeWease brought out the caution flag with a second-corner spin. Pauch opened a 10-car-length advantage within two laps after the green flag replaced the yellow. Blaney narrowed the gap to two car- lengths, however, as Jac Haudenschild and Andy Hillenburg exchanged third place during the race's middle stages. The leaders had just entered lapped traffic early in the 17th lap when "The Buckeye Bullet" dove into turn three and slid in front of Pauch to take the lead. Blaney quickly put 10 car-lengths between himself and his closest pursuers as Haudenschild pressured Pauch for second place. An engine malfunction in the #22 Pennzoil Maxim - the head of an exhaust valve dropped into a cylinder - kept "The Wild Child" from pursuing the runner-up spot during the final lap, however. Within seconds after former Williams Grove track champion Steve Smith raced past Hillenburg for fourth early in the white-flag lap, Kinser passed them both. Smith regained fourth place with a turn-four pass. Although an injector line was knocked loose with less than half a lap remaining, Blaney had 15 car-lengths to spare when he took the checkered flag. Pauch, nursing a blistered right rear tire, held off Haudenschild for the runner-up spot. Smith earned the final automatic starting position in Friday's main event by finishing fourth. Rounding out the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were Kinser, Hillenburg, Two Winners Racing teammates Greg Hodnett and Jeff Swindell, Todd Shaffer and "B" Feature winner Keith Kauffman. Steve Kinser, winner of 20 World of Outlaws "A" Features at "The Grove," coasted into the pit area with engine trouble midway through the race.
