Kinser Shines In BMP Debut
Billings, MT August 20, 2004 Steve Kinser added Billings Motorsports Park to the list of tracks where he's tasted victory in World of Outlaws debuts Friday night, becoming the fourth and final leader in the 25 lap preliminary feature in front of the largest crowd in the history of the speedway. The win assured Kinser the pole position in the dash that determines the top eight starting positions in Saturday's $12,000 to win finale.
Danny Lasoski established a track record in qualifying with a 12.281 second, 109.926 mph lap around the wide three-eighths mile oval. World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht Rookie-of-the-Year contender Erin Crocker earned the pole position for the feature with her victory in the first dash, with Brian Paulus grabbing the outside front row starting position.
Crocker took the lead at the drop of the green flag, with Paulus attempting to get by on the inside in turn four. As they crossed the line to complete the first lap, Paulus made contact with Crocker's left front wheel, sending the "First Lady" spinning in turn one. Tim Kaeding was the first to tag Crocker's slowing car, with Tim Shaffer making heavy contact with Crocker and flipping the Casey's General Stores #6 car. Kaeding, Crocker, and Shaffer pitted, but were unable to make repairs in time for the restart.
Paulus led the field back to the green flag, with eighth-starting Kinser moving by Jason Sides for fifth on lap 4. On lap 5, Jason Meyers took the lead from Paulus, using the low side of the speedway exiting turn 4. Meyers held a .7 second lead when he began to work traffic on lap 6, with Danny Lasoski getting by Paulus for second on the same lap. Steve Kinser got third from Paulus a lap later.
On lap 12, Lasoski, using the cushion on the very top of the speedway, took the lead from Meyers. Kinser moved Meyers to third on lap 14, and began working the bottom of the speedway in pursuit of Lasoski. Two laps later, the "King of the Outlaws" passed Lasoski for the top spot in turn two.
A lap 19 caution for Kraig Kinser bunched the field, and set up a spectacular three-car battle for sixth between Jason Sides, Donny Schatz, and twenty-first starting Daryn Pittman. Pittman got by Sides on the restart, before Schatz and Sides both drove by the Pepsi machine in turns three and four. On lap 22, Pittman got back by Sides and Schatz to re-claim sixth.
Steve Kinser took the white flag with a 1.3 second advantage over Danny Lasoski, but as he entered turn three on the final lap, the lapped car of Dennis Moore, Jr. trapped the 18 time champion on the low side, allowing Lasoski to make a final charge on the cushion that ended up just .21 second short.
